Doing Postcolonial IR:

In recent decades, mainstream International Relations has been substantively transformed by scholars critical of its Eurocentrism, its racism, its economism, and its various other myopias. Important among these critical perspectives is that of postcolonialism –  the belief that we cannot understand the contemporary world without putting the fact of colonial conquest, imperialism, genocide and economic plunder of the third world under global capitalism at center stage. Postcolonialism begins from the view that the discovery of the new world in 1492 by Christopher Columbus inaugurated a decisively new epoch in the history of the world- and the ramifications of that event are still unfolding. That is, postcolonial IR defines the “post” in postcolonial not as “after the end” of colonialism but rather as “after the advent of colonialism” – a colonialism that is still ongoing and that has by no means ended. This brief undergraduate course will offer a theoretical overview of such a postcolonial standpoint on global politics or international relations– and look at two examples of how one actually does postcolonial IR.
